Chateau Lafite-Rothschild Pauillac Moulin des Carruades 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Robert Parker scores this wine 90 points and writes: "This has become one of the finest second wines produced. The 1998 (a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is an outstanding effort. While very Lafite-like (although more supple and forward), it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to an excellent bouquet of black fruits, smoke, earth, and minerals, supple tannin, an excellent texture, and a long, fine finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2015."

I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion — balance. Read less

This wine had a nice nose, good body and balance, well integrated, but a slight tart, greeness to it. I had a bottle of this 1998 about 7 years ago, and I remember it being outstanding. I'm not sure what happened, but I may need to encounter it once again.
