What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

The quality of Château Lafite Rothschild needs no introduction. As early as 1815, Abraham Lawton had already designated it as leader: “I ranked it as being the most elegant and delicate, with the finest body of the three (leading wines)” he qualified in 1855. As to Château Lafite traits shared by all vintage years, it was an enlightened amateur that summed it up best by saying “...whatever the case, all the Château Lafite wines have an almond and violet aroma!”
Grape varietals : Cabernet Sauvignon 80 to 95%, Merlot 5 to 20%, Cabernet franc and Petit Verdot 0 to 3%. Note that there read more...are a few differing cases such as vintage 1994 : 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot, vintage 1961 : 100% of Cabernet Sauvignon
Length of ageing in oak barrels : 18 to 20 months, including 100% new barrels    (hide)

A very open and giving nose with a ruch of cassis, maduro tobacco, pencil lead, really gains in intensity with a classic, slightly herbaceous, spice (chinese 5 spice), exotic berry fruited nose that retains a toaty edge and hints of earth and eggshell. Certainly bigger and lusher than the 1988 with softer acidity, nice red fruits and leather up front with tannins only peaking out on the finish. While the nose grew all evening this became less interesting in the mouth losing a bit of it's fleshiness revealing more drying tannin. The fruit on the finish remains lovely with a bit more obvious toast read more...and scorthed earth as well as roasted plum. Nice and just entering it's peak drinking window.    (hide)
