What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

At the dawn of the 1986 harvests, after a half decade of success, the winemakers and wine enthusiasts were skeptical of yet another fine vintage. Yet a fine vintage it was: excellent weather in spring followed by a dry summer with light rains, all led to a very abundant and high-quality yield. The wines are onyx in color, and are very concentrated without being heavy, and have distinguished dominant tannins. This wine has many characteristics in common with the sequence of vintages from 1945 to 1949. It is a fine wine to be aged, because it is very structured and will benefit from a long dormant period.

Reviews

1986 produced a plentiful harvest of high quality-- deep garnet in colour, concentrated but rather light, and with a remarkable tannin. In a word, it was a great combination of vintage 1945 and 1949. It is a very good vintage with considerable potential that is destined for a long evolution.

You cant beat a Chateau Lafite, and this vintage is the same year as my birth, so it makes it even more special : )

"100,Wine AdvocateThe 1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential. Patience is required. "

Truly one of the most delicious wines I have ever tasted. Ambrosia. Nectar of the Gods. Superlatives are not enough. This followed a '61 L'Angelus that I though was perfection...100 out of 100, Then we had the Lafite. Not over-the-top, not cloying or super aromatic. Just about as smooth, balanced, complex, as one could imagine. The finish went on and on and one could feel priveleged just to drink in the bouquet without taking a sip.
