Château Labégorce-Zédé Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 2007

External Review by Astor Wines & Spirits:

A classic violet perfume of Margaux backed up with substance - opaque extract, acidic tannins and firm grip. Ready to drink, but can withstand some cellaring.

This part of the property, where the original chateau was located, situated on gravelly land on Margaux's highest knolls, was surrounded by the most famous vineyards of this village. The wines of L'Abbé Gorsse Pérès, like those of Labégorce Rooryck, were the leading crus bourgeois supérieurs of Margaux and the first time they were exhibited, in 1905 in Liege, they won both a Gold Medal and a Grand Prize. Château Margaux bought the vineyard back and, in 2002, Hubert Perrodo acquired the 17th century building. Labégorce is the heart of the estate: in the centre of the property stands an elegant, Restoration-era, neo-classical mansion, the work of the architect Corcelles (1765-1843). When it was built, the owner was Elisabeth Weltener, the widow of Jean Marcellin Bernard. It later passed in to the hands of Mr Capelle in 1832. Mr Fortuné Beaucourt then also acquired it in 1865. The vineyard continued to be lovingly tended and its wine earned a well-deserved reputation for being of the highest quality, with an exquisite taste and distinguished bouquet. The new owner of the estate, who was of strong character, was twice Mayor of Margaux. He kept a close watch on the village's interests. He undertook a great deal of renovation work on the chateau, managed by the architect Georges Minvielle (1867-1893). The estate was sold to the Rooryck family in 1918, then to the Condom family in 1965, before finally Hubert Perrodo bought it in 1989. Read less
