Editorial Reviews for Château la Tour Haut-Brion Red Bordeaux Blend Pessac-Léognan
A classic expression of tobacco and gravel over a very deep core of ripe, dark fruit greats the nose, Spicy and with a hint of camphor, a seductive nose. Opulent, ripe and chewy upon entry, zest and lively with lots of soft, ripe tannins, the fruit remains very crisp though continues to add layers, the long finish just echoes the flavors of the midpalte. While still very young this has the balance and intensity to age impeccably.
Dark ruby colour. I have tasted this wine along the other four 1st great growth and Haut-Brion seems rounder with more vanilla extract. On the palate it is lightly spicy and presents flavours of balckberries, dark cherry and toasted wood. The acidity is still high but well integrated with the fruits. The wine posses great balance with soft tannins and lingering finish. QC http://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com

In contrast to the 1993rsquo;s penetrating, upfront aromas, the 1994 is closed aromatically. With coaxing, some truffle-like, sweet, black friut aromas, as well as those of mineral/stones come forward. This spicy, full-bodied, powerful wine is a more masculine, structured effort than the 1993, with a potentially more complex, richer character. It is superbly crafted, beautifully balanced, and as pure as a wine can be. The integration of new oak, acidity, and tannin is commendable. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2025.
Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2025.
The 2000 Haut-Brion possesses a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a striking perfume of wet steel, hot rocks, minerals, plums, black currants, and cherries. Elegant yet deep, delicate yet authoritatively flavorful, this subtle, highly nuanced yet stunningly rich offering is a great Haut-Brion. The wine (a blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc) is a sensational Haut-Brion that should be uncommonly long-lived, even by the standards of this noble chateau. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2040.
A pure evocation of Graves, Haut-Brionrsquo;s rsquo;98 is all potential energy, a powerful layering of minerals, gravel, plum skin, grape skin, red fruit and game, all compressed within unrelenting tannins. You can see the intensity in the dense black-purple color, and you can taste it in the tremendous red fruit length. for all its power, it remains one of the most elegant wines of Bordeaux. Therersquo;s no bow to fashion, to international style. Jean-Bernard Delmas looks deep into the vineyard to create this wine and fashions it to develop for 20 years or more.
Old, aristocratic Bordeaux. This is difficult to consider as a young wine, entangled as it is in oak, the flavors buxom yet guarded. Compressed underneath the substantial weight therersquo;s a sophisticated, expressive Graves, a view into the stones of the soil as polished as the red fruits that form the core of flavor. Within that core, the wine holds all its freshness and power as if in reserve for the decades to come. On the outside, therersquo;s the oak, which only seems to grow more dominant with air, the fruit persisting as an undercurrant. This will need a decade of age to show itself more fully, and will likely continue to evolve for several decades more.
As reported over the last two years, this is a prodigious Haut-Brion. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a tight, but incredibly promising nose of smoke, earth, minerals, lead pencil, black currants, cherries, and spice. This full-bodied wine unfolds slowly, but convincingly on the palate, revealing a rich, multi-tiered, stunningly pure, symmetrical style with wonderful sweetness, ripe tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly 45 seconds. It tastes like liquid nobility. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2035.
Jean Delmas is thrilled with what he achieved at Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion in 1998. Statistically, the vats that went into Haut-Brion indicates that the 1998 has more to it than wither 1995 or 1996, and comes close (in numbers) to equaling the 1989 and 1990. It is one of the great successes of the vintage. Moreover, it is the paradigm for elegance allied to power. The color is an opaque purple. The nose offers up sweet black fruits intermixed with roasted herbs, pain grilleacute;, and minerals. There is a sensational, plush texture, yet the wine comes across as medium-bodied with multiple levels of flavor, as well as gorgeous ripeness and purity. It possesses fine density, but there is no sense of heaviness or imbalance.
