Chateau la Tour de By Cru Bourgeois Médoc 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

The stately Château of La Tour de By is situated at the tip of the Médoc, just metres away from the Gironde river. Built on the ruins of a 19th century mill it was bought and renovated in 1965 by Messieurs Pages, Cailloux and Lapalu. Today the estate is run by two of the late Marc Pagès's grandsons, Frédéric Leclerc and Benjamin Richer de Forges. The wines of Tour de By are Cabernet-dominated, packed with lively and spicy blackcurrant fruit and bolstered by a framework of well-integrated toasty oak. The wines are consistently of high quality, and the Château can list Michael Broadbent as one of their many fans, who remarked: "Also a favourite, for some time our everyday claret, is Château La Tour de By". La Tour de By is very much a traditional claret; the wines are fermented in wooden vats and aged for 16 months in new to 3-year-old barriques. Jancis Robinson rated the 2010 vintage 16.5/20, commenting: ‘Very sweet, ripe black fruits on the nose. Solid, fruity, dense with gravelly chew. No artifice. Very nice expression of place and time. Some astringency, but real life and lift. A delicate hand! Transparency. Real delicacy. Very refreshing, with lovely length.’ Drink now until 2026. Pair with Camembert, poultry or game.
