Chateau la Rame St Croix du Mont 1973

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/33786. St Croix du Mont is a small AOC for sweet white wines from a plateau made up of fossilised oyster beds around the village of that name on the north-east bank of the River Garonne about 25 miles south-east of the city of Bordeaux.Wine production goes back to at least Roman times. The appellation is less prestigious and less expensive than the Sauternes appellation on the other side of the river but it uses the same grapes in the same way.Chateau La Rame is one of the older and more renowned properties of the appellation and has been owned by the Armand family for several generations. The wine is made up of 75% semillon and 25% sauvignon blanc. It is harvested late in order to allow the development of a fungus called botrytis which contributes to the sweet taste.I started my bottle at the weekend with a plate of bread and cheese and I did enjoy it.It is very sweet almost like honey or syrup with notes of apricot and vanilla and a slight citrus aftertaste.
