Château la Nerthe Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2004
This red represents the elegant and refined side of Châteauneuf, offering complex spice notes and a mineral accent on the finish. Parcels of mixed varietals are vinified together in either ancient stone tanks, large wooden barrels or small barrels depending on the varietal content of each parcel. The blend is famous for it’s use of the 13 permitted grape varieties in the area, with Grenache usually playing a dominat role.
Château La Nerthe is the oldest producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, producing wine since 1560. The winery has been certified organic since 1998, and is among the region’s top five wineries. La Nerthe is a leader in the art of blending, combining up to 13 varieties - so that no one dominates.
A wine with more elagance than substance, nice with tannins still too obvious which will mellow with time... 90/100
a must to taste for chateauneuf consumers. To drink by itself, with any kind of meat, even with blood fishes, or acompanning mild cheeses with pears or grapes.. Ripe, rich, flavored, if you resist keeping it in the cellar, go for it for a couple years. as it is, ready to drink anyway.
Surprised to find a bottle of this in a restaurant in the Hunter Valley. My wife was looking at local labels, but having been around and looked at lots of local varietals, the Hunter being big on Shiraz, I wanted something Old World. It started out quite nice and opened up sensationally over the course of dinner.
