Château la Mission Haut-Brion Saint-Emilion 1988

Winemaker's Notes:

The wine shows deep colour with sustantial but supple tannin. It is long on the palate, while the aromas are still hidden due to the youth of the wine. At this stage of evolution it seems the vintage is not comparable to any other ones but 1966.

Château La Mission Haut-brion:
When the wine is young, the initial sensation is its unctuousness, the softness of a very ripe grape, the freshness of aromas and at the same time the texture of very special tanins. These meld with a trace of mineral in the wine. It is as if the land was in the glass, comprising notes of roasted coffee beans, cocoa and tobacco. This delicate bitterness is somewhat reminiscent of crystallized cherry-stones seeped in spirit. It is certainly a penchant for revealing all its qualities at once that distinguishes the wines of La Mission and pleases a lot of tasters. It is also the consummate expression of the land of the Graves of Pessac. When maturing, this wine is still generous, openly proffering all its qualities. This hedonistic side is one of its most attractive particularities. Read less

Still a baby- dark purple with no browning. Tobacco and dark red fruits on the nose- the palate is completely primary, very rich and full, but not without elegance- very nice wine.

What a beautiful and complete wine with dark chocolate crushed blackberry cedar and raspberry on the nose. Full-bodied with supersilky tannins and a beautiful licorice tar and fruit aftertaste. Long and complex. Will improve with age but delicious now.- 88/ 98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Wine Spectator.

Ferociously hard from cask, the 1988 La Mission is now exhibiting an attractive opulence and gobs of fruit. It has turned out to be a beautifully made, deep, full-bodied, concentrated, rich, well-structured wine that will last for 15-20 years. It is a bigger, deeper, yet softer, more concentrated wine than its neighbor, Haut-Brion. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2012.

I don't remember the '88 La Mission as being so wonderfully opulent. It shows fabulous violet, berry and dried fruit aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, ripe and delicious aftertaste.--1988 Bordeaux horizontal. Best... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1988 Mission Haut Brion, La 3000ml

A more firmly structured Haut-Brion built somewhat along the lines of the 1996 this dark garnet-colored wine is showing notes of licorice underbrush compost truffles dried herbs creosote and sweet black cherries and currants. Medium-bodied rich but still structured this wine unfolds incrementally on the palate showing superb density and a lot of complex Graves elements. It is just beginning to hit its plateau of full maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. Last tasted 11/02. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
