Château la Mission Haut Brion Graves Slightly Scuffed Label 1985

Château La Mission Haut-brion:
When the wine is young, the initial sensation is its unctuousness, the softness of a very ripe grape, the freshness of aromas and at the same time the texture of very special tanins. These meld with a trace of mineral in the wine. It is as if the land was in the glass, comprising notes of roasted coffee beans, cocoa and tobacco. This delicate bitterness is somewhat reminiscent of crystallized cherry-stones seeped in spirit. It is certainly a penchant for revealing all its qualities at once that distinguishes the wines of La Mission and pleases a lot of tasters. It is also the consummate expression of the land of the Graves of Pessac. When maturing, this wine is still generous, openly proffering all its qualities. This hedonistic side is one of its most attractive particularities. Read less

A soft nose with lots of band-aid and some camphor, lovely soft enry, well resolved and mouthfilling with just a touch of chewy soft tannin adding weight, good balance with rich red fruits, some menthol and tobacco on the moderately long finish, turns a bit dry and quite savory with air. A good choice for near term consumption.

The 1985 is deliciously opulent, rich, and open knit. The color is a dark ruby/purple with some garnet at the edge. Last Tasted 8/92 The 1985 is another example of how Haut-Brion appears to gain character in the bottle. From cask it was delicious, but hardly dazzling. After bottling, the wine's intense bouquet... This has always been one of the more seductive, savory, complex Haut-Brions of the eighties. My notes have always suggested that it is the quintessentially elegant, finesse-styled Haut-Brion. The 1985 is deliciously opulent, rich, and open knit. The color is a dark ruby/purple with some garnet at the edge. The wine offers a sweet, smoky, melted road tar, black currant-scented nose with toasty oak in the background. It has put on weight as it has evolved in the bottle, and appears to be better than ever, with copious quantities of lush, jammy black fruits intermixed with the smoky, roasted character so prevalent in this appellation. The low acidity and loosely-knit, medium to full-bodied, fleshy character make for delicious drinking.
