Château la Gaffeliere Premier G.c.c 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes :Rather muted nose, but some great blackberry fruit aromas coming up from the glass at times. Tannins rather obvious and perhaps even extraneous on the palate; there is fruit and texture, but a sense of dried out over-extraction.

Chateau Gaffeliere:
The Château La Gaffelière vineyard enlarges upon 25 hectares and gazes its 22 hectares vineyard all-in-one parcel between the Ausone hill and the Pavie one. The whole favourably south oriented, receives an ideal sunshine which benefits to the 35 years old vine. Hillsides are clayey and calcareous, whereas hill-feet are more siliceous. The vineyard is planted with 80% of Merlot, 10% of Cabernet Franc and 10 % of Cabernet Sauvignon.

RP: This is another St. Emilion estate that has ratcheted up the quality level since Michel Rollands team was installed as consultants. Possibly the finest wine La Gaffeliere has produced since their 1961 or 1949, the broad, expansive, deep ruby purple-colored 2003 boasts extraordinary elegance and purity as well as substantial flavor concentration. With copious quantities of dried herbs, black currants, sweet cherries, caramel, and spice box, this rich, moderately tannic beauty should be at its peak in 5-6 years, and last for two decades or more. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025+.
