Château Kirwan Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"This wine is somewhat of a paradox in that it offers soft, fleshy fruit as well as hard tannins that kick in in the finish. It seemingly has not settled completely following its malolactic fermentation. However, it reveals good spice as well as this chateau’s masculine, fuller style, but the tannins need to become better integrated and resolved." --Robert Parker*Robert Parker rating (86-88+ pts.)**We will notify you on arrival summer 2014.*

Château Kirwan is a Third Growth wine produced in the Margaux department of Bordeaux, in Cantenac, France. The 18th century property was originally owned by nobleman Renard de la Salle, and was known then as La Terre Noble de la Salle. Sir John Collingwood of Great Britain turned the estate into a working winery. It was passed on to his son-in-law, Mark Kirwan, and the name stuck ever since. The wine has the distinction of being one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorites.    The winery suffered much the same fate as many in the difficult times surrounding the French Revolution, the Phylloxera blight and world wars, with periods of destruction, replanting and changing of hands. A total restructuring of the vineyard took place in the 1950s at the hands of Jean-Henri Schyler with whom it gained a significant brand resurgence. In the 1990s, under the guidance of Michel Rolland, the wine took on a more modern style of heavier fruit extraction and use of new oak, bringing higher commercial success. The winery is now managed by Schyler’s children Yann, Sophie and Natalie. Rolland left the winery in 2007 to pursue other projects.    The grapes are grown in the sandy, gravely soil of Cantenac with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and the rest, Cabernet Franc.  Read less

Plenty of dark berries and fresh ceps on the nose and palate. Full to medium body with polished tannins and an attractive finish. Well-done. Reserved style of Kirwan. James Suckling. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Kirwan 6000ml
