Château Kirwan Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Readers looking for a masculine, powerful, concentrated, broodingly backward style of Margaux need look no further than the 2010 Kirwan. A dense opaque purple color is accompanied by notes of graphite, licorice, blackberry and cassis. Intense and concentrated with good acidity as well as a boatload of tannin, it should be forgotten for 7-10 years and drunk over the following three decades."*-Robert Parker Wine Advocate (90-93 points)**We will notify you on arrival Summer 2013*

Château Kirwan is a Third Growth wine produced in the Margaux department of Bordeaux, in Cantenac, France. The 18th century property was originally owned by nobleman Renard de la Salle, and was known then as La Terre Noble de la Salle. Sir John Collingwood of Great Britain turned the estate into a working winery. It was passed on to his son-in-law, Mark Kirwan, and the name stuck ever since. The wine has the distinction of being one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorites.    The winery suffered much the same fate as many in the difficult times surrounding the French Revolution, the Phylloxera blight and world wars, with periods of destruction, replanting and changing of hands. A total restructuring of the vineyard took place in the 1950s at the hands of Jean-Henri Schyler with whom it gained a significant brand resurgence. In the 1990s, under the guidance of Michel Rolland, the wine took on a more modern style of heavier fruit extraction and use of new oak, bringing higher commercial success. The winery is now managed by Schyler’s children Yann, Sophie and Natalie. Rolland left the winery in 2007 to pursue other projects.    The grapes are grown in the sandy, gravely soil of Cantenac with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and the rest, Cabernet Franc.  Read less

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Kirwan 2010 has a very attractive marine-influenced bouquet with touches of seaweed and iodine infusing the clean and pure fresh black fruit. The oak is neatly folded in here. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive cohesion on the entry. This is well balanced with more body and structure than its peers with plenty of dusky black fruit to give it persistency. Very fine. Tasted January 2014. Neal Martins Wine Journal.

Blackish crimson. Intense blend of very ripe fruit and some tobacco savour. Racy green finish - a bit angular - but lots of pleasure too. Edgy for the moment. Not the densest but with real verve. Jancis Robinson.

Tangy and elegant with lilac iron red currant and cherry notes all mingling together and carrying through the focused finish. Not big but pure lengthy and showing fine minerality. Drink now through 2025. -JM Wine Spectator.

The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins quite robust on the entry very good weight but mellowing nicely towards the creamy textured finish. This is a very fine modern style Margaux one that is very well crafted. Neal Martins Wine Journal.
