What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

A large vintage is always the result of alternating sun and rain in perfect rhythm for the grapes. The weather put on a great show for the 1999 vintage. The volume of the harvest is less than that of 1998 but despite the small quantity, the 1999 vintage bears all of the sought-after quality of a delicate vintage. Kirwan soils are quaternary Pyrenean gravels on an impermeable clayey ground. Average vine age is 27 years. The grapes were hand-picked with double sorting outside and in the vat house on a vibrating sorting table. Vinification was with indigenous yeasts and fermentation was at temperatures read more...

Reviews

Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Huge colour, masses of extraction, meaty and almost leathery, but good fragrance and Cabernet and Merlot well blended. A little soft and forward on the palate after all the concentration of fruit, but pretty and ripe. Ready 2005-2015. (tasted en primeur)

Rating: 89-92 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 96, May/June 2001 Full ruby color. Vibrant, deep aromas of cassis, blackberry, minerals, licorice and smoky oak. Large-scaled and impressively rich in the mouth; chewy and very concentrated. A rather powerfully structured, nicely delineated wine that should be long-lived. Another Margaux chateau that has improved dramatically over the last few years.
