What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

Very perfumed nose of red and black fruits, almost exotic. Gorgeous texture onthe palate fills the mouth, sumptuous. Great intensity, abundant but ripetannins, very long. Magnificent.

Berry Bros & Rudd review: In the words of Robert Parker, 'A strong argument can be made that this greatFirst Growth is the world's most elegant and aromatically complex wine'. In2005 it lives up to such an exulted billing An intoxicating bouquet ofsun-kissed red and black cherries abounds with hints of roasted coffee bean andmocha. This is a brooding, sleeping giant of a wine with monumental levels offruit but an exquisitely fine demeanour. Intense and mouthfilling withwonderful length, it has all the classic earthy mineral Haut Brion richnessthat you would expect. This read more...

IWC 97 (6/2008): Bright ruby-red. Wonderfully expressive nose combines black raspberry, mocha, hot stones, caramel and tobacco. Lush, fat and full but with terrific definition and suavity to its extravagantly dense black raspberry, stone and licorice flavors. As large-scaled as this is, it's not at all overly sweet. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with substantial tannins that are thoroughly covered by fruit. A great vintage for Haut-Brion.

"Superdark for Haut-Brion. The nose is mindblowing. Exotic. Like a bouquet of flowers with raspberries and currants as well as Chinese spices and fruits. Hints of new wood. Full-bodied, with ultrarefined tannins and great length--goes on and on. This is on its way to 100 points...95-100" WS95-100

"While almost primordial in its denseness, richness, and body, it retains its elegance and surreal nose of flowers, cherries, pain grille, crushed rocks, flowers, and ripe fruit. Powerful, dense, and in need of a decade of cellaring, this will be a 30 to 40-year Haut-Brion that should end up being a modern day version of the 1955….enormously impressive, and is a treat to taste…98." "This is incredible on the nose, showing coffee cake, blackberry, floral, coffee bean, and vanilla bean, with Chinese spices. A very complex, full bodied red, with seamless, hyperpolished tannins that caress every millimeter of the palate. Lasts for minutes. So beautifully balanced, I'm left speechless. Is it even better than the 1989? Bes after 2017. 9,800 cases made...100" -WS 03/08 "...
