The 2003 Haut-Mazeris - Canon-Fronsac is a phenomenal sleeper of the vintage. The wine possesses a huge nose of smoke, lead pencil shavings, chocolate, blackberries, and cassis liqueur. Full-bodied and dense, it is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage ... as hard as that may be to believe. There is plenty of tannin, but low acidity and abundant fruit provide accessibility. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and consume it over the following 15-20. I suspect if you extrapolate what the 1947 right bank wines may have tasted like, this has that same port-like style.
