Second wine of Haut-Bailly, with 44% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 16% cabernet franc. Deep, vibrant, opaque ruby. Very polished, with an alluring incense and licorice edge to the core of supple black cherry, anise and plum sauce flavors. Suave black tea and tar hints chime on the finish, but this stays open-knit and rounded. Drink now through 2018 Wine Spectator. Attractive spicy nose with coffee and chocolate. Some juniper and black pepper. Blueberries and dark cherries. Vibrant and smooth on the palate with good fruit and fine soft tannins. 64% cabernet sauvignon 30% merlot and 6% cabernet franc aged for 16 months in 50-65% new barrels. Situated on a 30 hectare plot its unique gravelly sand soils sit on fossil-rich subsoil. The 2011 vintage is a medium bright red. Soft pure and very fragrant on the nose a hallmark of Haut-Bailly this has aromas of tar and blackberry liqueur. With a soft entry this is ripe and pure on the palate with intense blue fruit flavors before yielding to some firm tannins. Though this will take some time to come together it also has one of the longest unhurried finishes of any 2011 Pessac. Owned by American Robert Wilmers since 1998 Chateau Haut-Bailly has seen a tremendous resurgence in quality. Well done. Tasted twice. Enjoy 2016-2026. Cory Gowan.

Winemaker's Notes:

"This is racy and refined white with beautiful fruit and fresh acidity. Full and fresh with lovely dried lemon and apple character with undertones of pineapple goes on for minutes. Lemon lime too. Reminds me of the 2004. 96+" JS 04/12 "Features a chiseled feel for now, with a blanched almond edge and a vibrant quinine note taking the lead over salted butter, floral, verbena and gooseberry notes. There's terrific depth and length, but a youthful rawness that needs to settle in. Tasted non-blind...95-98" WS 4/12
