Chateau Haut Bergey Premier 5 2005
"Performing fabulously well, the 2005 Haut-Bergey may ultimately rival the estate's brilliant 2000. Fashioned from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, it offers up sumptuous aromas of high-class cigar tobacco interwoven with hints of menthol, burning embers, black currants, and a volcanic/earthy component. The complex aromatics are followed by a wine with stunning concentration, terrific fruit purity, a voluptuous texture, and a long, heady finish. For its power and richness, it’s relatively light on its feet. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.
Tasted young. Impressive, lots going on. Should be even more intriguing in a few more years. Glad I bought a case.

The Cabernet based Graves has all the opulence and ripeness characteristic of a great vintage. The nose gives aromas of currant and black cherry fruit along with smoky charcoal and earth. Though it's drinking well now, three years in the cellar wouldn't hurt.

The 2005 Haut Bergey is a very serious bottle of wine. Powerful and well structured, it displays copious amounts of dark red and dark black fruits and gripping, well integrated tannins.
