Patience will be rewarded with this style of Bordeaux that typifies restraint and subtlety. The deep ruby-colored 2000 is an impressive youthful Haut-Bailly. It offers endearing notes of black cherries, raspberries, and currants mixed with tobacco smoke, soil overtones, and subtle wood. The acidity is low, the tannin is present, and the overall quality is pure and well-balanced. This is a classic example of finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

For the vintage, this is an austere wine, emphasizing tannins over fruit. the fruit is certainly rich, and the tannins are dusty rather than dry, but it is a wine that is developing more slowly, suggesting it is also a long-term cellar candidate.

Good bright ruby red. Deep, smoky aromas of plum syrup, raspberry, tobacco, iron and roasted nuts. Lush, silky and sweet, with insidious vinosity keeping the lush plum and tobacco flavors fresh and delineated. The suave Merlot tannins spread out to cover the entire palate. Much more a Merlot-dominated wine than the 2001, which is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine is light to medium-bodied, with sweet currant and smoke-infused flavors and some oak in the background, but plenty of red fruits, vanilla, and dried herbs. This is a soft, well-balanced wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.

Shows enticing aromas of blackberries and cherries that follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Subtle and refined. Best after 2007.

Elegance and power superbly exhibited in the 2000 Haut-Bailly. Dark ruby, opaque color with black currant, blackberry and Pessac-Leognan's telltale vein of mineral running through this full-bodied, complex red. Fine, smooth tannins giving this youthful Merlot-dominated wine drinking appeal now, but it will age well for years to come.

Wonderful finesse and length to this wine. Loads of plum and berry, with hints of raspberry. Full-bodied, with a solid, velvety core of ripe fruit and tannins. Long finish. One of the few Pessacs better in 2000 than 1998. American-owned. Best after 2010.
