Chateau Haut-Bailly is situated on the left bank of the River Garonne, south of Bordeaux  in the commune of  Pessac-Léognan –  home to all the Graves Crus Classés. A vineyard with 30 hectares (74 acres) of planted vines on one piece of  land, it sits on a high ridge overlooking a small winding road leading from Leognan to Cadaujac. The sloping terrain is well-graded and has excellent drainage. If great wine results from a harmonious relationship between man, the vine, and nature – a concept the French call terroir – the most subtle of these three elements is the soil. All this contributes to the special character of Haut-Bailly wine. Read less

A lovely example of mature Bordeaux, maybe past it's peak, but still doing well with a nice balance and smooth but lively tannins. Allways remeber the feeling of joy when I took the first sniff of this wine auction gamble. Sorry I didn't make notes.

Medium garnet; spicy vanilla nose with cedar and cassis accents; very full-blown cassis flavor; very concentrated generous and complex; has some volatile acidity but it s not a flaw. Wine Spectator.

Although surprisingly light-bodied, consistently pleasant and enjoyable, this is an undistinguished effort. The 1970 Haut-Brion has always come across as angular, and lacking the exceptional perfume and complexity this estate can achieve. In this tas... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
