Chateau Haut Bages Monpelou Pauillac France Bordeaux Vin Rouge Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Haut Médoc 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

The name of Château Haut-Bages Liberal has two roots. The LIBERAL family ran the property in the early eighteenth century. Brokers from father to son, they sold the harvest in the Netherlands and Belgium. Their name adjoining to the topographical designation, earned them to be invited worldwide to the table of political parties of the same name. Over time, these connoisseurs gathered the best soils of Pauillac. Thus, this 5th Classified Growth in 1855 now has half of its vineyards adjacent to Château Latour and the other half behind Château Pichon Baron, on the heights of the locality "Bages", a large plateau in the south of Pauillac. The property would regain his youth when, in 1960, the Cruse family, owner of Château Pontet Canet, another 5th Classified Growth in Pauillac, acquired the property. The Cruse would launch an extensive program of replanting the vineyard. However, it was in 1983 at the arrival of the Villars family that Château Haut-Bages Libéral really recovered its former glory. Today, the property is run by Claire VILLARS-LURTON. She undertook an overhaul of the tool of winemaking and she directs the vineyard management to a sustainable viticulture.

The usual blackberry, tobacco and currant nose is definitely there... and definitely Pauillac - but the wine still seems a bit... well, reluctant and closed. Upon entry, there are fine tannins present with stewed red fruit that would pair pleasantly with all kind of hearty fare such as roast beef or boar. There is also a medium finish with the red fruit living on for 30 seconds or more. Some finesse present with streaky spice and cedar hidden in the dominant red fruit mixture. A decent Pauillac from a decent vintage. Cellar for another 2 to 3 years and try again.

Another 2006 5th growth from the cellar. The bouquet is Cabernet-dominant with a blackberry and currant scent sprinkled here and there with graphite. On the palate, there is some residual tannin, although the melange is balanced with lots of red fruit. Fruit depth is a little weak (a victim of the vintage no doubt) with a shorter finish than expected. A typical Paulliac from an average vintage and worthy. Drink now through 2015. 88 points.

In all fairness should say that the remaining half bottle of this wine has transformed miraculously overnight. Still too hollow on the mid palate to really ring my bell, but tannins have settled in very nicely and the bouquet have opened up remarkably. Closer to 85 and sure it will benefit from up to 5 years further aging.

At this stage kind of disappointing from such an estate, even its "just" a 2nd wine from a lesser vintage. Nice deep garnet color. Really closed on the nose though with a charming underlying hint of roasted coffee. Opens up after a while with some air but still rather one dimensional. Super tight and very dry in the mouth, with a quite pronounced green flavor profile. Grassy almost. Bit hollow on the mid palate. Light to medium bodied. Could perhaps improve with a bit more age, but doubt the fruit and substance is there to match the aggressive tannin over time. Give it food and a lot of air or chance it with another 1-5 years in bottle- it can only improve from this awkward stage. 80-83 pt

Beautiful nose of ripe blackberry and currant. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Very well done. Impressive. —J.S. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2006 Haut Bages Liberal 750ml

Dark clear ruby core and rim. Bold mint chocolate aromas float over more delicate lilac, backed by dark black cherry. Very nice structure even on the front of the palate. The body builds in the middle - quite a lot of oomph. A bold, solid fruit core ... Mike Supple. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2006 Haut Bages Liberal 750ml

Tasting Notes:

The vintage 2006 has a good structure due to the high quality of the cabernet sauvignon. The vintage is similar to the 2004 by the classicism of its balance. Today the nose is very aromatic, fruity and spicy. On the palate, the wine is full and the tannins are still present. Today, the nose is rich and spicy. The mouth is full but the tannins are still firm and will time to get supple.
