Chateau Gruaud-Larose Fifth Growth 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review:
Surprisingly accessible as well as supple, this 2001 St.-Julien reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a rich bouquet of smoke, roasted vegetables, black currants, plums, licorice, and Asian spices. Velvety-textured and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit, and a plump, expansive, plush texture, this is an atypically forward Gruaud Larose to drink now and over the next 12-14 years.
(Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Jun-2004)

Colour: Dark rich inky in colour, with some brickyness developing around the rim of the glass. Nose: Mint, Eucalyptus, blueberries and some pencilly wood charcter quite pronounced . As the wine opened up I noticed some confectionary aromas vanilla and strawberry. Mouth: dark cherry, casis, blackberry flavours. Very fine tanin (Not Chunky). great length. Some pleasant earthy charters coming through on the finish. The wine is still vibrant and could happily sit for another 5 years.

...Exotic aromas of raspberry leather and smoked meat. Juicy and tightly wound with slightly roasted flavors of currant and leather. The leathery note continues on the aftertaste... Stephen Tanzers IWC.

This is a great Bordeaux showing intense, smoky, mineral-laced blackcurrant fruit on the nose, with real depth of aroma. The palate is rich, tannic and full of concentration of primary fruits. There's great potential here for the cellar.

This shows a rich and dense nose of blackberry coffee and smoke. Full-bodied with soft and round tannins and a long smoky finish. Very fresh and velvety... Wine Spectator.
