In the bottle, Gruaud-Larose appears to have returned to the form it possessed when I first tasted it from cask - a stylish, surprisingly civilized, medium-bodied wine without the muscle and power expected from both this terroir and vintage. It still possesses excellent density as well as roasted herb, licorice, and black currant flavors intermixed with incense-like smells. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, and forward, especially for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

A typical wine for the year with its generous ripe fruit and blackberry jelly flavors. There is just a hint of animal on the palate, but it is overwhelmed by the wine's rich texture.

[Barrel tasting] This wine is black. Super aromas of licorice and tar, then violets. Full-bodied, with sleek and racy tannins. Very long finish. Best Gruaud ever?

Aromas of blackberry, meat and earth follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a rich finish. Decadent, balanced and very approachable already. I thought it would have been a little better than this. Best after 2014.

A dense garnet/ruby/purple color is followed by a wine with a sweet, jammy, black-cherry, Asian spice, soy, and earthy-scented nose. This big, beefy, medium to full-bodied 1995 Gruaud Larose displays excellent ripeness, plenty of muscle and glycerin, and sweet yet noticeable tannin in the heady, intensely spicy finish. this is a mid-weight, substantial wine that needs 6ndash;7 years to shed its tannin; it should keep for two decades.

Harmonious, but lacks a bit of concentration. Pretty, with delicious chocolate and berry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Best after this year.

Good red-ruby. Redcurrant, leather and game on the expressive if slightly rustic nose. Sweet and concentrated but a bit youthfully aggressive, and not showing the refinement or definition of the 2006. Strong nutty oak component. Finishes with substantial tannins that are a bit richer and more fully buffered by the winersquo;s middle-palate material than those of 2006. It will be interesting to compare these two vintages in ten years or so.
