A typical wine for the year with its generous ripe fruit and blackberry jelly flavors. There is just a hint of animal on the palate, but it is overwhelmed by the wine's rich texture.
[Barrel tasting] This wine is black. Super aromas of licorice and tar, then violets. Full-bodied, with sleek and racy tannins. Very long finish. Best Gruaud ever?
Four days after our panel met, staffers gathered to taste the top wines with their labels revealed, and Ray Isle noted this as an ideal vintage for Gruaud, one in which the fruit can live up to the structure. looking back at my notes across several days, this wine had been fighting its oak when first opened, hinting at rose under the primary fruit intensity. Floral qualities became more distinct over the next two days, the energy rising, the wine brightening to the scent of fresh, floral grapes and rose petals, even as the structure limited all the sweetness of the fruit. Now knowing what this heady, dense wine is, the structure makes sense, as does my note from the first day: gracious as a classic Bordeaux.
In the bottle, Gruaud-Larose appears to have returned to the form it possessed when I first tasted it from cask - a stylish, surprisingly civilized, medium-bodied wine without the muscle and power expected from both this terroir and vintage. It still possesses excellent density as well as roasted herb, licorice, and black currant flavors intermixed with incense-like smells. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, and forward, especially for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.
Good red-ruby. Redcurrant, leather and game on the expressive if slightly rustic nose. Sweet and concentrated but a bit youthfully aggressive, and not showing the refinement or definition of the 2006. Strong nutty oak component. Finishes with substantial tannins that are a bit richer and more fully buffered by the winersquo;s middle-palate material than those of 2006. It will be interesting to compare these two vintages in ten years or so.
Aromas of blackberry, meat and earth follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a rich finish. Decadent, balanced and very approachable already. I thought it would have been a little better than this. Best after 2014.
Aromas of blackberry, toasted oak, sweet tobacco and espresso. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish. I like the texture. Best after 2010. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
