This still has the so-called Cordier funk, meaning the glass was full of damp tobacco, ass, leather, ass, and a touch of ass with layers of barnyard all woven together in a very expressive package. On the palate this is still big and rich with powerful if slightly rustic flavors of leathery black currant, earth, and a surprising floral tone. The tannins are nicely softened but still give this fine grip on the long finish. Classic Bordeaux and about as good as us mere mortal can expect in today's market. 93pts

This dark garnet-colored, unctuous, rather viscous, deep wine has reached full maturity. The 1983 Gruaud-Larose exhibits a provocative nose of roasted herbs, animal fat, jammy blackberries, licorice, and cedar. It is a big, fat, juicy, and succulent wine, with sweet tannin in the finish.

Solid, intense; roasted coffee and cassis aromas and flavors lead to a lovely ripe fruit finish. Well-built with firm tannins. Drinkable now but better after 1998.--The Bordeaux 50. (JS) Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1983 Gruaud Larose 750ml

Tasted at the chateau at their --3-vertical. Harvested from 26th September this is a vintage I have long enjoyed. It has a delectable bouquet of dark red berry fruit redcurrant and a touch of pomegranate with subtle notes of cedar tobacco and a touch of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that lend it very good structure. There is plenty of red fruit to enjoy crisp acidity and great tension on the finish that admittedly does not possess the extravagance of the 1982. Yes
