Chateau Gravas Sauternes 2001

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for ten pounds from a wine merchant in Sussex. It is from Sauternes, an appellation for sweet white wines about 30 miles south of Bordeaux on the left or west bank of the river Garonne.Chateau Gravas [www.chateau-gravas.fr ] was bought by the Bernard family in 1850 and is currently run by Michel and Florence Bernard They are heavily involved in tourism as well as wine making. It is a small 8 hectare estate usually producing only 2000 cases a year but it is close to the classed growth chateau of Coutet,Climens and Doisy Daene. The wine consists of 95% semillon and 5% sauvignon blanc and the grapes are hand-harvested very late in order to allow the development of a fungus called Botrytis which contributes to the sweet taste. The wine is matured in oak barrels.I drank my bottle last night with a plate of bread and blue cheese and I thought it superb. It is extremely sweet like honey or syrup with plenty of fruit [think apricots or peach] but there is also a very strong more acidic citrus taste. There are a lot of flavours in the mouth at once with this wine
