Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Red Bordeaux Blend Pauillac 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The brilliant 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits classic Pauillac aromas and flavors of creme de cassis along with stony/floral notes. Proprietor Xavier Borie has created a wine that should rival the brilliant 1982, 1990, 1996, and 2000. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and superb length (a 40+ second finish), the purity of this beautys black currant fruit is something to behold. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.

Bananas, mango, coffee, so carribean flavors are strong, but it opened up nicely after double decanting...finishes with raisins.

This wine was given to me as a gift for christmas (that I got to pick). The notes in the store said that blackberry and cassis were used in the creation of this wine, and since I really enjoy those I thought that was the bottle for me. When I first opened it the berries were really overpowering, but after a few minutes of opening up it was absolutely fantastic. I'd have to say it was one of the better wines that I have ever had due to its even and smooth taste. If I ever had the chance again I would definitely buy it store and try to resist drinking it!

Rich and cedary with concentrated and tannic fruit thatrsquo;s tight and closed. Hints of currant and black cherry complement the ripe Cabernet fruit. Tannic on the finish.

This wine has put on considerable weight and intensity since I tasted it last spring. It exhibits an opaque black/purple color, followed by an explosive nose of cassis fruit, licorice, and new oak. Full-bodied and dense, with superb richness and huge levels of extract and glycerin, this appears to be a great Grand-Puy-Lacoste that may rival the profound 1990 and 1982. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2025.

Another unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassis-scented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is another beauty. It should be drinkable with 4ndash;5 years and keep for 25ndash;30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2025.

This is unquestionably a profound Grand-Puy-Lacoste, but it is excruciatingly backward. It reveals an essence of creme de cassis character which sets it apart from other Pauillacs. The wine is displaying plenty of tannin, huge body, and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals and subtle oak. Massive, extremely structured, and with 25ndash;30 years of longevity, this immensely-styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste will require 7ndash;8 years of patience, perhaps longer. A superb, classic Pauillac. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2030.
