What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

MB *** (12/1997): In cask, it was lean and flavoury. Later, I noted it as a very fragrant, sweet, distinctive, its dryness embodying fairly high volatile acids, otherwise very good.

Tasted May 2008: Known for being one of the best Filhots of the last decades, this is indeed a very good wine. Lovely deep yellow colour with a touch of gold, yet not as deep as other 1990 Sauternes. In the bouquet and the taste, the major characteristics are elegance, balance and great purity. Moderately sweet, with excellent counterbalancing acidity, rather light but intensily flavoured. A true-to-type Filhot, delicious to drink by itself. Will keep for another decade.

WS 90 (8/2000): Balanced 1990. Pretty aromas of lemon rind, honey and flowers. Full- to medium-bodied, medium sweet, with lots of toasted coconut, honey and ripe fruit.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2003. 10,000 cases made.
