Château Ferrière Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Candied nose and yet somewhat salty too, weird – dry, honest if a bit ungenerous, uncovered mid-palate structure, some modest red fruit, innocuous (81-82)

One can't miss the Chateau Ferrière vineyards. They are behind stone walls right at the heart of the village of Margaux. There are other plots of land, which slope gently down towards the Chateau Margaux plots, which rise up a ditch further away. From the Chateau which is at the end of the park walkway, the famous "pavillons rouges" mark the limit of the Premier Cru vineyards. With its eight hectares, Ferrière is the Medoc's smallest Cru Classé. The soil is composed of very deep Garonne gravel on chalk marl. It is said in the Medoc region that the vine plants should suffer! 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot express their suffering for the pleasure of connoisseurs worldwide. Since 1992 huge efforts work and exigence wise have been made at Ferrière, and this wine has surprised professionals by the celerity with which it has come back to the top. Read less

Tasted September 2009: A marvelous wine, with that tell-tale Margaux nose and flavour. Medium-deep colour which has just begun to mature, a very refined, deep and at the same time intensely perfumed bouquet. Slender, graceful in the mouth, with a very tasty dry tannic structure, excellent concentration and a long finish with lip-licking acidity. This wine is ready to drink but will keep its quality for 5-7 more years.

Opened the 1995 tonight, it started with an incredible aroma of chocolate, tabacco and potentially mushroom-- really wonderful and complex. However, the initial sip was almost tasteless, the only hint of things to come was that at the tail end it gave up some flavor. Did not decant the bottle because I did not want to quickly tire the wine, and let it sit in the bottle for about an hour. It opened up incredibly, like a new wine... always smooth and mellow, but complementing the incredible aroma and provided a long delicious finish. Excellent wine. Just treat it with respect and let it air in the bottle for an hour. I believe it should be consumed soon, not sure how much life it's got left. It's like a fiesty 90 yr old teaching you about life. Could croak any minute. I have a couple more bottles and will probably drink in the next month.
