In 1593, the Sauvage family acquired Château d'Yquem, which came into the Lur Saluces family when Francoise Joséphine de Sauvage married Count Louis Amédée de Lur Saluces in 1785. Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces perpetuated his family's tradition as manager of Château d'Yquem for more than 35 years. His efforts were guided by a single philosophy: an uncompromising approach to the highest quality, vintage after vintage. Thanks to his determination, this great wine's reputation reached new heights. All famous wine lovers, from Jefferson to Tognini, by way of Grand Duke Constantine of Russia, confirmed Yquem's greatness as the years went on. In May 2004, L.V.M.H. / Louis Vuitton - Moët Hennessy, main shareholders of Château d'Yquem since 1999, asked Pierre Lurton to take over management of the estate. Member of a famous Bordeaux wine family, this passionate winemaker and viticulturalist, who is also in charge of Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion and Cheval des Andes in Argentina, has all the necessary qualities to maintain Yquem's legendary reputation with a respect for tradition and an openness to modernity.

Bright light gold. Ripe cling peach fresh apricot spices coconut minerals and white flowers on the nose with a note of vanillin oak emerging with air; subdued but wonderfully pure and precise. At once thick and light on its feet showing an utterly seamless texture and compelling sweetness but also lovely inner-mouth tension thanks to its suave acidity and underlying minerality. Vibrant light gold color. Shows high-toned aromas of lemon peel toasted coconut spice and Madagascar vanilla bean. Good weight on entry and a rich palate-coating texture with flavors of creme brulee lemon custard ripe pineapple and a nice complement of botrytis spice. A moderate perception of sweetness gives way to focused refreshing acidity. Though still very young and taut this shows good depth with well-delineated flavors and excellent potential. Yquem is widely acknowledged as the greatest sweet wine producer on the planet. However, what few people realize is that they also make tiny amounts of a dry white called Y (pronounced Ee-grec in French) in vintages when conditions permit. A blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes come from the same vineyards used in d'Yquem's famous sweet wine. Since its first vintage in 1959, it has only been produced 24 times. Not only is Y among the greatest dry white wines in France when it is young, it also has outstanding aging potential, gradually developing a multi-faceted elegance.
