Extremely concentrated, yet subtle. Aromas of honey and spices, with an intense botrytis nose. Full-bodied, thick and fruity, with orange peel and lemon rind character. Medium sweetness. Balanced, yet thick and backward. Reminds me of the harmonious 1990 - certainly the best since then. Best after 2008.

Beautiful golden-yellow color. The nose is concentrated and incomparably pure with classic fruit aromas (apricot, fig and quince) as well as strong citrus overtones (grapefruit). The bouquet also has strong floral elements, which is rather unusual, as well as oak nuances (vanilla and toast). The nose is altogether complex, subtle, and elegant. The wine starts off very round and soft on the palate, developing great balance and purity. This is a perfect Yquem, in no way excessive or overwhelming, but lacking nothing, including a long aftertaste. It is extremely attractive and approachable now, even though its ageing potential is virtually unlimited.

Half-Bottle, 375ml The best of the best, Chateau D'Yquem stands alone as the grandest and greatest of the wines of Sauternes. Single botrytis-infused berries are hand selected in the meticulous and painstaking winemaking process that puts Yquem at the pinnacle and kept it there for centuries. This 1996 at 19 years old still shows youthful vigor. Parker scored this wine 95 points and said "Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals loads of power in its restrained, measured personality. There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem. However, patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2060." EXTREMELY LIMITED!!!

A sensational Yquem, 1997 may be this estate's finest effort since 1990 (although I would not discount the 1996 turning out to be nearly as good). The 1997's light gold color is accompanied a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin, it looks to be a great vintage for this renowned Sauternes estate. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2055.

Very classy and beautiful, packed with botrityzed flavors. Marvelous blend of vanilla, cream, tobacco-box notes, with a lot of oak on it for now but also loads of pure, clean and elegant fruit. An infant that will age for a long time. Best after 2020.

Truly superb. Yellow with a gold hue. Intense spice, honey and dried orange peel aromas. Full-bodied, very sweet and very alive. Vibrant Sauternes that goes on and on on the palate. Doesn't get much better than this. Beautiful now,but wait. Best after 2010.

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review: Ch. d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world and who
can doubt it when they produce wines like this. With an enticing nose of
toasted nuts, vanilla cream and soft orange marmalade the palate is as
impeccable as ever. Whilst almost all 1996s are drinking now, this will require
further patience.
