What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

"Floral, lemon, apple and cream with dried pineapple and apricot. Full-bodied,but very focused and refined. It starts slowly and then, wham! It goes on andon. Spicy, dried fruits and spices. Full-bodied, medium-sweet. So long andexciting. Incredible. It is very close to 2001. We will see.."

Lovely, brilliant, golden-yellow color. Concentrated nose of apricot compote, dried fruit, and figs with vanilla and floral (jasmine and acacia blossom) aromas. The bouquet opens up after swirling in the glass to reveal extremely fresh citrus zest overtones that emphasize the wine's subtle refinement. 2005 Yquem starts out deliciously suave and caressing on the palate, with perfect balance. Classic notes of almond shells, coconut, and honeysuckle show how young this vintage really is. There is a huge prresence in the mouth with thick, rich apricot flavors, great structure with spicy notes coming from both the botrytis and wood. The finish is fresh and full of yellow fruits that just linger. Quite young and in tact to hold for decades to come.

Rating: 20/100 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Yield of 12 hl/ha - almost record high levels! Quite deep gold. Wonderfully deep nose - never smelt anything as intense and glorious as this! Extraordinary!!! Deep yet lively. Exciting depth of pear juice and zest - tangerine peel too. Great astringency. 2001 was more concentrated. This is more transparent. Lovely dancing stuff, but already in the super-nuanced Yquem idiom. Lighter than some vintages but with great lacy complexity. Wonderful green, lively notes and some real explosiveness - 13.5 per cent. Energy drink! Coiled like a taut spring.
