What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

Nestled in the southeasy of Bordeaux, Château d’Yquem is the world’s most sought after dessert wine – the benchmark by which all other dessert wines are judged.

Reviews

A celebrated vintage--a beautiful wine. Thick, rich and dense, with banana, tropical, dried fig flavors. The texture is creamy and the balance is marvelous.--Yquem vertical. Best after 2010. (PM) Wine Spectator. A Sauternes Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1971 Yquem, Chateau d' 750ml

Jancis
Robinson

Rating: 16/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Deep butterscotch colour. Rich crème brûlée scent. Very very full flavoured, quite brutal impact on the palate. This wine could become something splendid but for the moment is about 16.

Rating: 0/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Medium-gold; firm smoky nose, beginning to show its age, perhaps not a perfect bottle; lush, very concentrated, fine acidity, slight pineapple tone, a hint of oxidation, meaty but not inelegant; very good length, honeyed finish.

document.getElementById("NoProductImage").innerHTML = ""; Only 6 bottles or less available. Robert Parker 92 points!"This is an outstanding Yquem- but I have been plagued by bad bottles in tastings- which I hope is only attributable to poor storage and handling. The top bottles exhibit plenty of ripe- concentrated tropical fruit and botrytis. Full bodied- deep golden in color- with a spicy- caramel- toasted roti- fat flavor- this big- rich wine is developing quickly for an Yquem. Although irrefutably outstanding- this may be a slightly overrated vintage read more...
