What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Reviews

Rating: 94(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 103, July/August 2002 ($92-$125) Bright medium ruby. Deep, superripe aromas of dark berries, black cherry and bitter chocolate; slightly exotic crystallized fruit aspect. Dense, sweet and wonderfully rich; a lovely combination of palate-caressing chocolatey fruit and firm underlying structure. Finishes with excellent grip and great palate-saturating sweetness. Another outstanding 1996 Medoc wine in the making.

I've had this before and it has been spectacular but this was a strange bottle. Nose came roaring out of the gate with ripe fruits and some lead pencil, smoke, tar . . then then this stank of almost bacteria took over after 1.5 hours and rendered the wine nasty to the nose and stripped the wine of it's fruit. The first hour this wine was going good with a deep well-structured palate and sweet fruit and then it just dived off a cliff and became nasty. Strange experience.

This extraordinary wine may be the greatest Ducru-Beaucaillou I have ever tasted. For now, let's call it the finest wine made at this estate since 1982. Moreover, it is developing in such a manner that it may even eclipse that renowned vintage. The 1... Robert Parker. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou 1500ml

I don't remember much but I remember it was juicy, ripe, wide open, finessed and long.
