Château du Glana Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien 1996

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought two bottles of this wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/42867. Saint-Julien is a Bordeaux AOC created in 1936 for wines from in and around the Saint-Julien-Beychevelle commune on the Medoc peninsular. It is a small [900 hectares] but prestigious appellation with 11 Grand Cru Classe in the 1855 classification..Chateau du Glana was started when the well known Rhone Valley negociant ,the late Gabriel Meffre bought a 5 acre plot from Chateau St-Pierre in 1961.It has been extended since and his descendants still own and run it.In the 1990's the top cuvee was the Vielles Vignes. It consists of 67% cabernet sauvignon,27% merlot and 6% cabernet franc and is aged in oak barrels.I started my bottle last night with my supper of roast pork and I enjoyed it.There is a fairly intense blackberry, cherry or licorice fruit there and the tannins are fairly soft although it is still a well structured wine.I thought it very good and very drinkable and I would give it high marks

Château du Glana:
Chateau du Glana was constructed in 1870 for the original owner,a Mr Cayx, who bought a 5 hectare vineyard from neighbouring Chateau Saint Prierre. After several other owners it was bought by the well known Rhone valley negociant Gabriel Meffre in 1961.He increased the vineyard to 43 hectares by buying plots from 3rd growth Chateau Lagrange. The estate is now run by his descendants and has a high reputation
