Château du Cèdre Cahors 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Not yet reviewed; 2013 vintage rated 92 points and 'Editors' Choice' by Wine Enthusiast: Although there is a little Merlot and Tannat in the wine, it is 90% Malbec. Still firmly tannic, it is concentrated and spicy. It has a dark dry texture that is lifted by ripe blackberry fruit. With acidity cutting right through, the wine is nowhere near ready to drink. Wait until 2019.

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/32646 for a mere £5.50..Cahors is an AOC for malbec based wines from the area around the town of that name in south-west France. about 60 miles north of Toulouse and Chateau du Cedre [ www.chateauducedre.com is regarded as one of the top pro0ducers.It is now owned and run by the brothers Pascal and Jean-Mare Verhaeghed but originally by their grandfather. and has several plots covering 27 hectares and is now fully organic. The wine consists of 90%malbec.5%tannant and 5% merlot and is aged in oak barrels.I started my bottle last night with my supper of roast chicken.Like most Cahors it is very dark in colour. It has a liquorice, cherry and blackcurrant fruit taste.I would say it is smooth and mellow and the tannins were fairly soft although there is a dry aftertaste.Overall I would say it is a lovely wine and far better than the last Cahors I had the Chateau la Coustarelle

Dark red color. On the nose aromas of coffee and plum. The hint of mint is a characteristic of wines from Cahors. Dry tannins.

Mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in equal supporting roles this deep red exhibits flavors of blackberry and sweet tobacco leaf. Cool minty flavors mingle among plush tannins on the finish.

Rustic, earthy, classically-styled Bordeaux, fragrant with spicy cinnamon and toasty oak. Itrsquo;s 80% Merlot, with the remainder split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Smooth and elegant, but with a richly textured and complex palate of dark berry fruit, smoke and baking spice. Great everyday go-to dinner wine mdash; pairs well with roast pork, steak, hearty, mushroom-laden pasta dishes or grilled vegetable platters.

"Pitch black to the eye. On the nose brooding notes of dark fruit. Plums and black cherries on the attack, with blue berries emerging in the mid-palate. Smoky oak and stony earth tones emerge over time--and all is framed by savory flavors of dark chocolate and coffee bean. Wondrously complex, layered with flavor after flavor. Power tempered by grace--a Cahors that display none of the rude nor brutal notes of yesteryears! A connoisseur's wine!"
