Gamay Droit is a vinifera variety that you’re not going to encounter anywhere other than Chateau des Charmes. Canadian wine industry pioneer Paul Bosc, one of the most recognizable figures in the Ontario appellations, holds the international “Plant Breeder’s Rights” to Gamay Droit, discovered during clonal research in 1982. Bosc and his vineyard managers noticed a single wonky vine in the Gamay rows, growing more upright position than its comrades and began studying this vine and its offspring. It was found that Gamay Noir “droit” as the upright vines were called, tended to ripen about 10 days later than regular Gamay, helping to facilitate higher Brix (sugar) levels at harvest and a higher concentration of pigmentation. Continued study and characterization has led to what some call “Canada’s first vinifera”. The 2005 vintage had a fairly aromatic nose, highlighted by red currant, cherry, and raspberry. It was far from one-dimensionally berried though, with complimentary red licorice, pepper, and moderate oak bringing depth to the bouquet. The palate was less about flavour and more about structure, with dusty, soft tannins taking the edge off of an otherwise dry and oddly acidic wine. We found it to be a little harsh, but in fairness, we drank it extremely young. Given a couple of years worth of bottle time, the 2005 Gamay Droit should soften and hopefully develop some of the richness and complexity that it has become known for.

Winemaker's Notes:

Elegant, pure and fine red cherry fruit and very complex, sappy flavors that display good structure. Classic Charmes in a feminine style with excellent balance. This is hard not to like.
