Food Pairings for Château de St. Cosme Condrieu Puyvert
A dark ruby red nearing purple in color. The nose, intoxicating, with blackberry and sour cherry mixed in a layer of bakeshop sweets. Digging deeper animal musk, spiced sausage and a bit charred wood with a hint of heat. On the palate this is smooth, thick and rich with raspberry jam and citrus rind that turns to sour berry and a bit of pepper. The tannins are a bit furry but coaxed along by a core of vibrant acidity which leads to a fresh mineral laden finish. A big wine with a healthy dose of elegance and grace. (My wife's notes: Berrylishus!)
Dark purple in the glass. The nose shows strawberry fruit, followed by raisin a hint of barnyard, soil and wet leaves. A big rich and smooth performance with sweet cherry, sage and violets on the palate. A long finish remicient of blackberry jam. A big racy wine that's very sexy in the glass. This was the majority favorite of the night and the '06 Janasse CDP, that I scored higher, was only the winner for me by a hair.
The nose showed blackberry, savory-meaty aromas, garrigue, bacon fat and lots of crack black pepper. On the palate, it became fleshier over the course of four hours with a smooth seductive mouth-feel. This is a dark and savory wine that showed only a hint of black fruits and never lost that extreme pepper and spice note. -------------- The following day. After 18 hours, and having been double decanted, and allowed to rest in bottle, the nose showed blackberry, savory reduction sauce, ginger snap, garrigue and fresh-cracked black pepper. On the palate, its massive structure continued to keep this wine in check, as mouth coating tannin allowed only a glimpse of dark stone fruits, spice, menthol and black pepper. The finish was tight yet long with spice and menthol.
...Looking in the glass like it was poured from an inkwell... dark, brooding and daring, this Gigondas matches in the strength of its aromas: waves of violets, herbs, blueberry, and plum followed by a smoky minerality. Then onto the palate with big, contrasting flavors of gamey meats, black pepper, tea and black cherries. All combine to create a very complex package with a silky finish. This definitely will age well, but is very approachable now.
Good year for the southern Rhone. Great producer. Excellent wine. Very typical for Gigondas.

91 Points - The Wine Advocate"The 2006 Cote Rotie (100% Syrah, 9,000 bottles produced) was aged in 60-70% new oak casks. Its gorgeous nose of tapenade, creme de cassis, and flowers is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine displaying sweet fruit, good acidity, beautiful density, and a subtle dosage of oak."91 Points - International Wine Cellar"Deep ruby. Raspberry, cherry, violet and minerals on the nose, plus an undercurrent of smoky minerals. The smokiness repeats on the palate, adding complexity to the sweet red and dark berry flavors. Cracked pepper and sweet floral pastille notes linger on the finish, which is admirably pure and persistent."Winemaker's notes:Elegance is the major word in 2006 which will remain as a good classical vintage. Our vine in the Cote-Blonde confirmed a quality improvement related to the draught of the last vintages... All the vines around the Viaillre developped as usual their incredible typicity: sweet texture, aromas of graphite and smoked bacon. This vintage reminds me of 1998, with more freshness. 1998 tastes very well at the moment. Cote-Rotie 2006 will age with harmony because the grape ripening went just to the right level.Squashed lead, blackcurrant, bacon, roasted coffee.
Pure and silky, with layers of black cherry and crushed plum fruit woven with sanguine and macerated olive notes. Nice underlying cut runs through the sage-tinged finish. Drink now through 2018. 750 cases made. -JM Opaque ruby. Ripe blackberry and plum aromas are complicated by cinnamon and cracked pepper, along with a strong mineral underpinning. Displays fresher red fruits on the palate, with gentle tannins adding grip and structure. Shows excellent finishing focus and length. According to Barruol, this contains "lots of Cote Brune fruit" and clocked in at just 12.5% alcohol, while the 2005 is 13.5%. 90 Points - Wine Spectator A structured version, with a layer of bacony toast guiding tar, black currant and fig flavors. Toast holds the upper hand on the finish for now, but this has solid depth.
A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France.
