We insist you try this wine. Really. From the region of Tavel in France's Rhône Valley, famed for its delicious rosés, comes a top-quality blend of mainly Grenache and Cinsault. Herbal notes and dry grass on the nose, crisp minerality along with bright watermelon and strawberry on the palate, and a strong, fruity finish. Excellent value from a top producer.
Tavel rosés are made in the tiny, sleepy village of the same name, less than 10 miles southwest and across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Nine Rhône grapes (both red and white) can be used in the winemaker's blend. Grenache and Cinsault being the primary grapes used. Despite its pretty ruby color, this is a wine that is rugged, robust and spicy. Incredibly fresh and bright, it has flavors of raspberries, cherries and wild herbs. Bone dry, it has an appealing roughness, an edge that makes it perfect for washing down dishes laden with garlic, olive oil and fresh herbs.
The brilliant 2008 Tavel (50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 15% Clairette, and 5% Syrah) is a big-boned, brawny, dry rosé with plenty of flavor. It cuts a savory, heady feel across the palate. Enjoy it over the next 8-12 months.
A powerful and focused Rosé, with a big core of red cherry, raspberry and red currant fruit laced with spice and tobacco hints. A nice stony note weaves in on the finish, adding length and cut. Drink now.
The gorgeous strawberry/kirsch-laden 2007 Tavel is full and very expressive. A total hedonistic turn-on, this wine should drink splendidly well for 10-12 more months.
The excellent 2003 Tavel rosé is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 15% Clairette, and 5% Syrah. It possesses a light ruby color as well as elegant strawberry and cherry flavors with hints of pit fruit and spice. Enjoy it over the next year. This large, 108-acre estate was long in the doldrums, but the quality over recent vintages has been top-notch. Moreover, the wines sell for a song, so bargain hunters have been beating a path to their door since the late nineties.
