What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

St. Cosme's (pronounced comb) Gigondas displays superb balance between fruit and frame-between its ripe, spicy grapeyness and tannin structure. The blend consists roughly of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsaut. The Grenache gives fat, fleshy fruit; Syrah gives dark color, grip, spice and black fruit; while Cinsaut gives perfume. This excellent, well-constituted wine will warm your bones.

WA 90 (2/2003): The dark ruby/purple-colored 2000 Gigondas is a flattering, sexy effort displaying copious quantities of jammy blackberry and cherry fruit, an unctuous, ripe texture, low acidity, sweet tannin, and oodles of fruit. It should drink well for 8-10 years. If you have not yet tried the wines of St.-Cosme, you're missing the boat.
