Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"Utterly perfect, the 2007 Gigondas Homides Fides is the finest Gigondas I have ever tasted (it is first ever to merit a perfect score). The sad news is that there are only 250 cases for the world. A true elixir, a smorgasbord of aromas soars from the glass, including scents of blue, red, and black fruits, spring flowers, incense, and damp earth (somewhat reminiscent of a fresh black truffle). The wine possesses superb intensity, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, phenomenal concentration and purity, and impressive precision as well as length (the finish lasts close to one minute). It is not as accessible as the Valbelle or Le Claux, so 2-3 years of cellaring will be beneficial. I suspect this wine will evolve for 15 or more years. Bravo to Louis Barruol...10" WA 10/09

Château de Saint-Cosme:
Saint Cosme - located north to the village of Gigondas - is the most ancient estate in the region. The '07 has toned down its tropical fruits over this last year of cellaring and renders a lovely "pear and green apple" duo of flavor. All this only ties even better to the marvelous dry, round front and mid palette. The viognier has its day in this wine. Simply lovely and a welcome surprise from the Rhone.

The prodigious, full-bodied 2007 Gigondas Valbelle exhibits a dense purple color as well as a glorious perfume of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, dark cherries, and ink. It reveals prodigious concentration, a 45+-second finish, and no hardness or rough edges. The vintageandrsquo;s acids have given the wine tremendous aromatic and flavor freshness, delineation, and vibrancy despite its enormous size and richness. This wine should evolve for 10andndash;15+ years.

Still tight, but with a gorgeous core of raspberry and black Mission fig fruit in reserve, as well as black tea, chalky minerality and a long, perfumy finish that really stretches out nicely. Should blossom with cellaring. Best from 2010 through 2019.

The 2009 Gigondas Valbelle exhibits perfumed floral notes intermixed with hints of underbrush, crushed rocks, roasted herbs, blueberries and blackberries. Medium to full-bodied with moderate tannins, it will benefit from 2ndash;3 years of cellaring and keep for 10ndash;15 years thereafter.

Bright purple. More high-pitched than the straight Gigondas, showing vivid raspberry and floral scents and strong minerality. Juicy red berry flavors gain depth and power with air and take on a smoky, dried floral quality. The finish is spicy and impressively energetic, with lingering notes of smoke and minerals.

2007 Saint Cosme Cotes Du Rhone Blanc is Chateau de St-Cosme itself can trace its history back to the year Columbus made his trip voyages across the Atlantic and the cellar itself includes stone tanks first lowered into position by Roman
