Château de Pena Red Blend Vin de Pays d'Oc 2009
The cooperative winery in Cases de Pene, a small village in the Roussillon region of Southern France, goes by many names, but with its Catalan culture, most Americans simply call it ‘Peña'. They have produced Cuvée de Peña Rouge, which is blended by HPS, for 20+ years, making it one of the longest-standing and most popular HPS wines.

With raspberry and white pepper aromas, this young red bursts with aromas and flavors of ripe raspberries, plums, red currants and tart cherries. Smooth and easy to match with anything, this is an excellent and versatile value.
Ripe, dark fruit flavors dominate this medium- to full-bodied red, with lovely chocolate pudding notes, and smoky elements.
The quality and value of the 2007 Cuvee de Pena comes with some bad news. This vintage was especially dry and windy even by local standards, and the crop was reduced by nearly half, to their lowest level in a dozen years. This blend of Carignan with around 40% Grenache and 10% Syrah offers an aroma of ripe blackberries, bay leaf, brine, and crushed stone. Mouth-filling and refreshing, its black fruits, marine minerality, and herbs really cling, simply forcing you to smack your lips either in satisfaction, or in an attempt to remove the residue. Taste this wine and nobody will convince you that you must compromise with quality in today's marketplace in order to pay just ten dollars.
The ruby-colored 2000 Cuvee de Pena Vin de Pays des Pyrenees Orientales is sold in the UK by the Wine Club as "Full French Red." Offering sweet red cherry and rose aromas, this light to medium-bodied, attractive, well-made, easy-going red displays cherries, raspberries, and blackberries in its pretty, flavorful personality. Consume it over the next three years.
This blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah has a very rustic peasant quality with a balanced display of cherry fruit and smokiness akin to BBQ. My colleague Paul makes an amazing ratatouille that goes seamlessly with this wine. Ask him for his recipe when you come in to buy the wine; they both are well worth trying.

The as usual Carignan-based red 2009 Cuvée de Peña is simply the finest of its illustrious bargain-priced breed that I have tasted (and I go back 20 years with this cuvée and its predecessor), which also makes it a mind-boggling value! Clean and polished, concentrated but unexaggerated, this delivers sweet fruit with soil and soul. Ripe cherry, black raspberry, and purple plum are shadowed by their distilled counterparts in a high-toned nose and practically gush on the palate. Pungent, resinous herbs, smoky black tea, toasted pecan, brown spices, and crushed stone all serve for aromatic and gustatory interest, leading to a brightly juicy yet deeply rich finish. Buy it by the case, or buy it by the bag-in-box; delight and - if you dare reveal its price - amaze your guests over at least the next couple of years, though quite possibly longer.
