Chateau de Myrat Sauternes Grand Cru Classe En 1855 1996

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/3839 for £20 a while ago but this past weekend I took it with me when my sister invited me to dinner as Sauternes is her favourite wine.Chateau de Myrat has an ineresting history It is still owned and run by the Pontac family who are also associated with several other Bordeaux Chateau. In the 1855 classification it was made a 2nd Cru Classe but in 1975 all the vines were taken out because of poor sales, the first time this had ever happened with a Classed Growth. In 1988,however it was replanted and wine production began again in 1991.The wine is made up of 83%Semillon,8%Sauvignon Blanc and 4%Muscadelle,the grapes being hand-harvested very late in the season to facilitate the development of a fungus called Botrytis which gives the wine its sweet taste. It is matured for two years in oak barrels. The wine is very sweet, almost like honey or syrup with notes of vanilla, apricots or pineapple.Iliked it but I thought the Loupiac Gaudiet I had a few months ago was better as it had a fresher taste
