I suspect most readers will find it hard to get excited about the 2002 vintage for the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes after what appears to be a prodigious 2001. However, 2002 is a very fine year for this region, possibly superior to any of the vintages between 2000 and 1991. The wines possess plenty of botrytis, but neither the impressive definition nor the supreme elegance of the 2001s. This is a sweet, full-bodied, fat, concentrated, intense effort that was showing well in September 2003.

Lots of spices, lemon rind and honey follow through to a thick, full-bodied palate. Long finish. Dense and sweet. Wine Spectator. A Sauternes Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2005 Chateau de Malle 750ml

Full yellow. Aromas of peach, flowers and marzipan. Dense on entry, then sweet and concentrated in the middle, with a slightly aggressive note of reduction showing today. In an awkward stage, but this boasts strong sappy, spicy material. Like a couple of these ’05s, this seems youthfully musclebound in the early going.

Winemaker's Notes:

The vines (Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle) have an average age of between 30 and 40 years and are planted at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare. Each year the fruit of the vine patiently awaits the progressive invasion of the noble fungus called botrytis cinerea. The vintage, in accordance with tradition, is still brought in by hand by means of successive selective pickings. Each individual grape is only snipped off once it has achieved a perfect state of “rôti”, that is to say, when it is shrivelled up and fully concentrated. Three to five pickings are usually necessary. This varies depending upon all the combined conditions for making great Sauternes. The average size of the vintage is minimal and is situated between 12 and 15 hectolitres per hectare.
