What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

The vineyards are situated in the communes of Preignac and of Fargues. Only 28 hectares of the vineyard area of Château de Malle are dedicated to the making of Sauternes. The vines are planted on the undulating slopes of a plateau of medium altitude on gravelly clay soil on a siliceous sub-soil. The vines (69 % Semillon, 28 % Sauvignon and 3% Muscadelle) have an average age of between 30 and 40 years and are planted at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare.

Golden-colored, with extreme aromas of honey, candied lemons and mandarin oranges. Full-bodied, very sweet and concentrated. It goes on and on. Thick and rich. Loads of spicy, almost hot botrytis character. Best after 2010. -WS A fabulous effort, the 2001 De Malle is closed aromatically, but it exhibits tremendous palate penetration, deep, full-bodied flavors, great acidity for balance, and marvelous notes of lavender, honey, pineapple, creme brulee, and spice.
