Chateau de l'Estang Cotes de Castillon-Bordeaux Futures France Bordeaux-Cotes de Castillon Merlot Blend 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

87-90 points Robert Parker: Another sleeper of the vintage, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2009 l'Estang exhibits lots of sweet black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with a hint of vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, with surprisingly pure, concentrated, lengthy flavors, it should drink well for 5-6 years. (Apr 2010)

Another so-called "sleeper of the vintage", this Côtes de Castillon does indeed deliver for the price: similar to some St-Emilion if one might be so bold. The colour is of medium depth with red fruit (perhaps strawberry) and Merlot clearly dominating the flavour profile. Sufficient grip to survive up to 5 years but this is not necessary: the balance is good now with a medium finish and just a touch of unwanted acerbity. Good value. 87 points.

This wine can be very tannic, so I'd advise decanting and letting it sit out a while to unwind. I poured it 4 hour before dinner, and the result was excellent. When it comes out of its shell, it is a big-bodied red with an nice balance of merlot lushness and cab acidity and structure. It's great alone or with foods such as roasted meats, chicken, Italian pasta dishes, or a big meaty pizza.

Smooth, plummy, flowers. Chewy. Smoky finish.

This blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc sports a solid, deep purple-ruby hue; aromas & tastes of ripe black fruits (blackberry, black currant, boysenberry), with hints of vanilla, cocoa & brown spices from the oak treatment. Full-bodied, long on flavor, it is true to its grapes & vintage: smooooooth, juicy and round. Enjoy with red meat preparations, both bloomy-rind & firm, aged cheeses, by itself by the fire.
