Château de Lamarque is an estate on the left bank of the Gironde (not far from Margaux), in the Haut Medoc region of Bordeaux, France. The magnificent castle was originally built between the 11th and 12th century, and there is evidence that wine was produced on the property as early as the 15th century. However, it wasn’t until the 1840s, at the end of the Revolution and under the direction of the Pons Count of Fumel, that the estate began producing wine commercially. However the subsequent Phylloxera crisis and the World Wars caused many stops and starts, and the wines went largely unnoticed. In 1960, Marie-Louise d’Evry and her husband Roger Gromand brought new significance to its wine production, producing well acclaimed wines. In 1985, their son Pierre-Gilles Gromand-Brunet d’Evry and his wife Marie-Hélène took the reigns. Their children Célia and Elisabeth are being groomed to take over once they retire.    The grapes for the wines are sourced from three distinctive plots with gravel soils, sharing neighboring terroir with some of the finest producers in the region. They consist of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.  Read less
