What to Expect

The Grand Vin of the Southern Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf is perhaps the quintessential blended wine. With 13 varieties of grapes allowed, 15 if you included both the light and dark skinned varieties of Grenache and Picpoul, each winemaker has the ability to craft a unique and distinct interpretation of the soils and climates of the region. While few producers use all or even most of the 13 varieties, most rely on Grenache to form the heart and soul of their wines. These are rather big and distinctly warm climate wines that are rich with alcohol. The tannins of Grenache are modest, so many of these wines require little aging to be enjoyed; yet many can improve over the course of a decade. Typically one finds rich strawberry and red cherry tones in Châteauneuf with complicating notes of herbs and lavender, frequently referred to as "garrigue". There are frequently notes of game, leather and tar, typical of Syrah and Mourvedre - two other important components of many wines.

Winemakers Notes

(Wines of the Year - Decanter Award 5/5 Stars- Decanter Nov 08)
"2005 is set to rank alongside 1998 and 2000 as one of the most powerfuland long-lasting of the recent Chateauneuf vintages. The power is evidenced bya firm tannic backbone; the quality of the year by the sheer concentration andcomplexity of the fruit. Garigue, sousbois, blackberry and Provence herbsare all evidenced on the palate. A magisterial wine, perfect with game. LaNerthe have made an outstanding 2005; a wine of character and substance, realbut not over-bearing gravitas here. Both a vin de plaisir and a vin demédiatation!"

Right off, this wine seems a little overly hot. The alcohol is maybe a bit off balance. Maybe it's this bottle. Who knows. Although, in defense of the alcohol, the acidity seems pretty up there as well. This may be a big wine, but it's not flabby.
I usually adore this wine, I think this 2005 needs another year and/or needs to be decanted longer and/or needs to really be cellar temp.

There ist a reason this appellation is called the "House of the Pope": It is a virtual religious experience. All wines 'arrive alive' in the bottle, waking up when we release the cork. This blend of gracious goodness maybe even more so? It was my first French and also my first blend. Yea verily, I know: Nice way to start! This came as a huge shock to my disciplined, calculate, self-taught education of Vino, one varietal at a time where I was 90% though the first course e Cabernet Sauvignon's.
While this can have by rule up to 13 grapes used in the blend, this C-D-P somehow maintains read more...

Full of ripe, earthy fruit along with a good tannic backbone. This wine has a nice, slightly chalky character to it that addd complexity. Drinking well today but could still be cellared for a few years to come.
