Chateau de la Grave Nectar Vieilles Vignes 2005

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/124492.It is from the Cotes de Bourg appellation. This appellation was created in 1936,although there is a record of winemaking in the area as long ago as the 2nd century AD,from a large area of 15 communes around the small town of Bourg-sur-Gironde.This town is located on the right or east bank of the Dordogne river close to the confluence with the Garonne. My bottle is the top flagship wine from a family run producer, consists of 90% merlot and !0% cabernet sauvignon, and was aged for 18 months in oak barrels.I started the bottle last night with my supper of roast lamb. There is some lovely blackcurrant, plum.coffee and vanilla style fruit with some soft but structured tannins. In short, this is a nice example of a right bank claret that went very well with my lamb..

Château de la Grave:
This is a 14th century castle that was restored in the 19th century and now used as an upmarket guest house. The Bassereau family bought it in 1900 and it is now run by Philippe and Valerie Bassereau. There are 45 hectares of vines and a range of red, rose, white and sparkling Bordeaux wines are made. The estate should not be confused with Chateau La Grave in Pomerol.
