Château de Cugat Red Bordeaux Blend Bordeaux Supérieur 2005

Member Review by tabednar:

This is a Merlot heavy Bordeaux Supérieur (70% Merlot) that was highly recommended to me in the under $15 price range. I held on to it for a while before drinking it but still I think it could have used some more time in the bottle. I decanted it a little over an hour but the wine may have opened up more if decanted longer. The person who recommended it to me said to even let it sit over night to fully appreciate it. It was medium bodied and had notes of black current and slight vanilla. I feel like the tannins where muted and that the flavors should have had a much longer finish. I would like to try this wine again in a year or two with possibly a longer decanting time.

Decanted an hour before serving. Fruit and floral aromas on the nose. Primarily berry and plum flavors on the palate with some oak as well. Seems to me like merlot is the major component in the blend. Somewhat firm tannins and a nice level of acidity give an edge to an otherwise smooth body. This wine seemed just a little bit closed to me and I wonder if it would benefit either from further decanting or perhaps more aging in the bottle. Nothing exceptional going on with this wine, but nothing wrong either.
