Château de Beaucastel White Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

[96 pts Robert Parker] Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape blanc Vieilles Vignes is a knock-out wine from very old vines with 50% of it kept in tank and 50% barrel-fermented and the blend done prior to bottling. The wine has fabulous intensity a big sweet nose of exotic fruit fig marmalade and honeysuckle huge body decent acidity and an unctuous palate. It is a gorgeous wine.

In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame. The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet". Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom. The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. The letter from Louis XIV, also signed by Colbert, to Pierre de Beaucastel is still in our possession. Two centuries later at the time of the phylloxera, the owner of Beaucastel was Elie Dussaud, a companion of Ferdinand de Lesseps who built the Suez Canal. In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978... Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history. Read less

As usual Coudoulet punches well above it's price class! This is so well framed with the assertive structure of 2005 wrapped in a deep flannelly blanket of spicy plum fruits. There are nice mineral, floral and earthen notes here but this is really about wonderfully pure, deep fruit. I love Coudoulet with some age on, I just, regrettably, finished my stash of 1998s which were absolutely singing. In a world where $50 Cheateauneuf have become the norm this remain a serious bargain. 91pts

The winery indicates it has use of all varietals this appellation will allow, whether or not they are in there at what percent, is their business, and by gosh, grant them what is theirs in this heavenly pursuit: parts of MOURVEDRE, GRENACHE, SYRAH, CINSAULT, VACARESE, COUNOISE, TERRET NOIR, MUSCARDIN, CLAIRETTE, PICPOUL, PICARDAN, BOURBOULENC, and ROUSSANNE make up their issue of solid reliability in the hierarchy of French Classics...ah, those Perrin Brothers, must be some guys. Pierre Perrin gives us deep opaque lush plums und blackberry rosettes of fragrance, in a stoic resilient spiciness that fades quickly to a lower volume monotone balance backdrop that is the gauze curtain behind which a big layer of complexity exists in flying buttress mineral structures like any Middle Earth Cathedral, one that follows the taste flowing out to the end in gentle release with a balanced eloquent finish prescribed by, whom else, must be by decree of Pope John XXII. It is that noble. Spectacular expansive, serene realm of all that it touches kind of nobility. I like the accessibility of the Château La Nerthe C-D-P much more for the apparent multi-faceted spice complexities, but give Beaucastel their due and diligence, they are at the top in their own realm. Rate this 2005 vintage an easy 96

Definately a great value at $24 (the coudalet). I drank 2005 Coudalet and the 1998 Chateau de Be..($95) a day apart, and I must say I will be hard pressed to pay the higher price when the Coudalet was filled with beautiful aroma and complexity, both to the nose and palette.

Extremely dense, with compacted layers of braised fig, blackberry and hoisin sauce that will need cellaring to stretch out fully.
